A Reflection on God’s Love
“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” — 1 John 4:16
Love is the foundation of our relationship with God. It is not merely an attribute of His nature—it is who He is. Every action of His toward us is motivated by love. From the moment He formed us in our mother’s womb to the moments we feel furthest from Him, His love remains constant, unwavering, and relentless. His love won’t fail us.
God’s love is different from how we, as humans, love. We often place conditions on our love—we love when it is reciprocated, when it feels good, or when the other person meets our expectations. But God’s love isn’t like ours. His is unconditional. Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This is the depth of His love—it is sacrificial, boundless, and given freely, not because we deserve it, but because He chooses to give it.
Love in Action: The Cross
The greatest demonstration of God’s love is the cross. Jesus, God in the flesh, willingly endured suffering and death so that we could be reconciled to Him. He bore our sins, our shame, and our punishment out of love. This love is not passive; it is active and costly. It is love that pursues, redeems, and transforms. It is a love that chases us, even in our running.
When we struggle with doubt, insecurity, or feelings of unworthiness, the cross stands as a reminder that we are deeply loved. There is nothing we can do to make God love us more and nothing we have done that could make Him love us less. His love is not based on our performance, but on His character. And His character is the same yesterday, today, and forever more.
God’s Love in Our Daily Lives
God does not love us from a distance. He is near and involved in every detail of our lives. He loves us as a Father—guiding, disciplining, and providing for us. He loves us as a Friend—walking with us in our joys and sorrows. He loves us as a Bridegroom—desiring intimacy and closeness with us.
In moments of hardship, His love sustains us. In moments of failure, His love restores us. In moments of loneliness, His love surrounds us. I know all too well how deep loneliness can be. God meets us in those moments. The more we abide in His love, the more we reflect His love to the world.
Loving Others as He Loves Us
Because we are loved by God, we are called to love others. Jesus commands us in John 13:34, “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” This means loving not just those who love us back but even those who are difficult, unkind, or undeserving—just as God loved us when we were undeserving. I’m not gonna like it; showing love like this isn’t easy in our current climate and world. Yet, we are commanded to do so.
True love is patient, kind, forgiving, and selfless (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). As we grow in our understanding of God’s love, we are empowered to love others in ways that go beyond human strength. I know for a FACT I can’t love as He commands us to on my own. His love transforms our hearts and enables us to reflect His grace in our relationships.
A Prayer to Rest in His Love
Lord, thank You for Your unfailing love. Help me to grasp the depth, width, and height of Your unending love for me. Let Your love shape my identity, heal my wounds, and flow through me to others. Teach me to love as You love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
May you rest in the truth that you are deeply and perfectly loved by God—today and always.
